Server CPU Platform Checklist: Socket, Processor Family and Configuration Review

Use this general server CPU checklist to collect the exact platform and processor fields before requesting a replacement or additional CPU.

01 / Check

Identify the exact server platform first

Begin with the exact server or motherboard model and its published processor-support documentation. A processor family or a physical socket alone does not establish that a particular CPU is supported by a given firmware, board revision, or multi-processor configuration.

Record the installed processor part number when the request is for a replacement or matched configuration. Platform documentation is the appropriate source for support requirements and update prerequisites.

Platform review

A matching socket is one check in a larger platform review.

  1. 01

    Platform model

Server or board model and revision

  2. 02

    CPU support list

Published processor family and part numbers

  3. 03

    Firmware

    Documented revision or update prerequisites

  4. 04

    Configuration

Power, cooling, and processor layout rules

Use this as a collection checklist, not as a compatibility determination. Published platform documentation remains the reference.

02 / Check

Compare the published processor fields

For a candidate processor, compare the manufacturer part number, processor family, model, socket, core count, thread count, clocks, and TDP fields published on the listing against the platform requirement.

Do not infer a supported combination from core count, clock speed, or a matching socket name. Use the exact platform documentation to review processor support, firmware requirements, power limits, cooling, and configuration rules.

03 / Check

Provide the configuration context with the request

For an exact CPU sourcing request, include the required part number, quantity, server or motherboard model, processor configuration, and any relevant firmware or cooling constraints known from the platform documentation.

A Source a Part request starts an availability review; it does not certify platform compatibility or guarantee a final configuration. Confirm the final part number and platform requirements before ordering or installing a CPU.

Questions

Common planning questions.

Does a matching socket prove a server CPU is compatible?
No. Processor support depends on the specific platform documentation and can include firmware, board, power, cooling, and configuration requirements.
What should be included in a server CPU sourcing request?
Include the exact part number when known, quantity, platform model, current processor configuration, and relevant requirements from the platform documentation.
