RDIMM vs LRDIMM vs UDIMM: Server Memory Compatibility and Substitution Guide
Use this server-memory checklist to review RDIMM, LRDIMM, and UDIMM requirements before requesting a substitute or mixing module types.

01 / Check
Start with the platform memory requirement
RDIMM, LRDIMM, and UDIMM identify different DIMM types. They are not interchangeable labels for modules with similar capacity, speed, or connector count. Start with the server model, processor generation, and the memory population rules in the platform documentation.
Use the exact installed or required manufacturer part number when it is available. Then compare the listed DIMM type with the platform requirement before treating any module as a possible substitute.
DIMM type check
Compare module type with the platform requirement first.
RDIMM
Registered
Confirm the platform specifies RDIMM.
LRDIMM
Load-reduced
Confirm the platform specifies LRDIMM.
UDIMM
Unbuffered
Confirm the platform specifies UDIMM.
02 / Check
Do not infer a substitution from capacity or speed
A 32GB module at a similar data rate is not automatically a replacement for another 32GB module. Memory generation, DIMM type, voltage, rank, ECC, capacity, and population position can all be part of the platform-specific requirement.
Do not assume RDIMM and LRDIMM can be mixed, or that a UDIMM can replace a registered module, without explicit support in the server or motherboard documentation. The host platform—not the module title—determines whether a combination is supported.
03 / Check
Compare the listing fields with the server rule set
For every candidate, review the published manufacturer part number, memory generation, DIMM type, capacity, speed, voltage, rank, ECC, and form factor against the server requirement. A slot that accepts a module physically is not itself evidence of support.
TrustDIMM shows the specifications provided for each listing. Condition / Grade is published at the listing level when available and should be reviewed separately from compatibility requirements.
04 / Check
Request a review when the configuration is specific
If the exact module or quantity is not listed, submit the manufacturer part number, required quantity, server or motherboard model, and any population details through Source a Part. This gives the sourcing team the context to review availability against the requirement.
A sourcing response does not replace the platform manufacturer’s compatibility documentation and is not a compatibility guarantee. Confirm the final configuration before ordering or installing memory.
